Our Palm Oil Journey

1 comments — posted 2011 Aug by Clean Conscience

When Clean Conscience first started we had no idea about the palm oil issue.

It was not until 2009 whilst attending a green expo a few of our customers raised the issue with us. Concerned with what I was hearing I started to research the subject and was very upset with what I uncovered. Even worse two of our most  popular products (laundry powder and Automatic dishwasher powder) were made with pure soap powder which contained palm oil.

Such was the shock of what I found within the palm oil industry, I started working on an alternative as I could not and would not be a part of this environmental devastation.

We finally came across the fantastic ingredient of soap nuts and with a bit of research, testing and hard work
the very first Palm oil free laundry powder on the market was born.

Admittedly I was a little worried that consumers may baulk at a beige coloured laundry powder but our customers embraced it and were only to happy to try a palm oil free alternative. Clean Conscience laundry powder is now one of our best selling products.

The casualty of this story is our Automatic dishwasher powder. We removed this product from our line as we could not find an effective alternative ingredient (within our standards). We are still working on this product and hope to have a palm oil free Automatic dishwasher product out by the end of the year.

I believe the Palm oil issue is one of the greatest environmental disasters or our time and we all must become more aware of what is in the products we are using.

In the face of growing consumer concern with palm oil. some manufacturers are switching to “sustainable palm oil”.

Both businesses and consumers who are concerned about palm oil often look to the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) . The RSPO is a voluntary initiative that aims to create a certification standard for “sustainable” palm oil.

It is my opinion this organization lacks transparency and enforcement and as a result is ineffective.

We do not believe true sustainable palm oil exists.

CC Dishwashing Liquid

NOT JUST ANOTHER NATURAL DISHWASHING LIQUID

Because our dishwashing liquid is a little different to all others on the market we would like to give you some information on this product so that you can make an informed decision before purchase.

Why did we produce Clean Conscience dishwashing liquid?

Many natural dishwashing liquid labels will have a long list of chemical names, followed by the phrase “derived from palm” or “derived from coconut” the consumer is led to believe that these synthetic chemicals must be natural. Plant based ingredients undergo a chemical process to convert into a useable surfactant (surfactants are the chemical foaming agents used in dishwashing liquid to clean and makes bubbles) unfortunately the “plant based ingredient” you end up with after the chemical processing is usually anything but natural.
It is our belief that any product made using palm oil should not be classed as  eco friendly or cruelty free – for more info see Palm Oil

We pride ourselves on our honesty when it comes to disclosing our ingredients. No Greenwashing here.
Our ingredients list is basic, simple and effective, as with all of our products the consumer can read the ingredients list and see for themselves how basic and safe the product is.

 Why is it different?

 The positives

Cleans beautifully, leaves no residues, No need to rinse (low suds).
Our main ingredient is liquid soap made from pure coconut and olive oil (not processed). Coconut oil has wonderful cleaning abilities but is gentle enough to wash your face with, making this an ideal product for those suffering from sensitive skin.
Pure liquid soap is 100% readily biodegradable.
Palm oil free, no synthetic surfactants, cruelty free.
Made in Tasmania using 100% Australian Ingredients.

 The Negatives

May need to use a little more than others on the market.
Will not hold its suds, will bubble up at first but the bubbles will dissipate (you need chemicals for lots of bubbles).
As there is no chemical surfactant (plant or otherwise) to emulsify fats and oils you may end up with a greasy film around the edge of your sink. This will not effect the cleaning of your dishes,.

Why is our dishwashing liquid available on–line only?

It has been a difficult process to produce a dishwashing liquid that is effective whilst staying within our boundaries and standards  of ethical ingredients. All of our ingredients are produced in Australia and are of the highest quality. If we sourced our ingredients from china (as do most other manufacturers)  we could make all of our products a great deal cheaper.

We have worked for 3 years on this product and simply cannot make it any cheaper without compromising on quality. The high cost of production leaves no margin for retailers to on sell.

So most manufacturers would shelve a product they cannot make money on right??

At the end of the day all of our products are made from the heart and a genuine need to provide a truly ethical product. When it comes to purchasing eco dishwashing liquids there is not much choice out there for truly educated eco purchasers, we are happy to provide that.

I wouldn’t use anything else!!

Fabric Softeners

Many customers constantly ask us if we will be bringing a fabric softener onto the market.
In my opinion commercial fabric softeners would have to be one of the most toxic and unnecessary cleaning/laundry items found on the supermarket shelf today.
Fabric Softeners work by coating the surface of the cloth fibers with a thin layer of chemicals. These chemicals make the fibers feel smoother and prevent build up of static electricity, that "clean fresh smell" is also a nasty chemical usually labelled as fragrance.  Most of these chemicals have been linked to allergies, asthma, brain damage and cancer just to name a few. These chemicals stay in your clothes and are abosrbed by your skin. Children are most vulnerable as their immune systems are still developing and are not equipped for the huge onslaught of chemicals they are exposed to every day in our modern society.

The best fabric softener you an use is VINEGAR. It is readily available, cheap and yes it really does work!! If you need a fresh clean smell simply add a few drops of essential oil into your fabric softener dispenser or rinse cycle along with the vinegar.
Alternatively if you have a bottle of Clean Conscience window cleaner handy use that, the main ingredient is vinegar and it has a lovely fresh peppermint smell.
Clean Conscience laundry powder is made with soap nuts and will leave your laundry naturally soft, eliminating any need for fabric softener.

Palm Oil - Our journey so far

0 comments — posted 2011 May by Clean Conscience

When Clean Conscience was first founded the focus was on providing safe cleaning products that did not make me gag or break into a rash. I also wanted a product that did not pollute the planet and wanted to use ingredients that had been around for centuries, therefore eliminating the need for animal testing.

It was whilst conducting some research on soap powder that I came across some disturbing articles regarding palm oil. It was with horror that I discovered the palm oil we were using in our products was contributing to massive environmental damage and the impending extinction of orangutangs and other species.

I instantly made the decision to remove all palm oil from our products. After researching "sustainable palm oil" as an alternative I came to the conclusion that "sustainable palm oil" was a myth, a smoke screen for large companies to pretend they are doing the right thing!!!

Some of our products made the transition quiet easily to palm oil free but in the end we had to remove two of our most popular products from the market (dishwashing liquid and auto dishwashing powder). This proved to be very unpopular with most of our customers and we did take a bit of flack but at the end of the day you have to ask yourself the question: Is it worth wiping out an entire species, contributing to green house gases, supporting illegal pet trade, abusing human rights and contributing to many other atrocities just for the sake of a few clean dishes????  I DO go to sleep at night with a Clean Conscience!!

Soap Nut Information

0 comments — posted 2011 May by Clean Conscience

Soap nuts are not nuts but the fruit of the soap nut tree (Sapindus Mukorossi) and have been used for centuries in India and Asia for washing clothes, personal hygiene and general household cleaning.

They are grown in the wild without chemicals, harvested and naturally sun dried using fair trade practices.

Soap nuts contain large amounts of saponins in their shells which act as a natural, gentle detergent. When Saponins are dispersed in water they can dissolve fats and oils and help lift grime.

Soap nuts are gentle and natural and a great choice for people suffering eczema, allergies and chemical sensitivities.
